After weeks of preparations and playing dress up (including for an exclusive photo shoot for Junk's November 2009 issue), Malaysian acts Couple, Killeur Calculateur, Lovesick Avenue and Twinkies finally took to the stage for TOPMAN's big bash at Zouk KL on 13 November.
It was a Friday and after days of rain, the evening was looking dry and rather promising. It was to be a party fusing music and fashion, and we sure spotted some cool kids lining up to get into Zouk's Mainroom. Each guest got a real nice TOPMAN thumb drive to keep, while TOPMAN members received a notebook and a 20% voucher for their next shopping visit to TOPMAN/TOPSHOP.
Also spotted were local personalities like Sharon Chong (frontwoman of Hamsterdamnaged and now They Will Kill Us All), Melissa Indot and Dhiya Izwin from The Otherside Orchestra. As the Mainroom filled up with indie music fans, outside the hitz.fm Cruisers were creating a bit of a ruckus as they gave away goodies to lucky guests.
Sharing the stage together for the first time ever, and at a superclub like Zouk KL too, Couple, Killeur Calculateur, Lovesick Avenue and Twinkies put on a great show dressed to the nines in TOPMAN and TOPSHOP. Lovesick Avenue was up and fully impressed with their saccharine tunes, leaving the crowd wanting more–we'll just have to wait for their debut album release! Post-punk/math core mafia Killeur Calculateur made the party a rather black celebration with their dark uniformity.
Later, Couple brightened up the visual (and aural) mood with their happy-clappy sound and new tunes from their latest release Teenage Disc Fantastic. Last but not least, to take the party to higher ground were Twinkies, the cheeky duo of AraByrd and Nadia. It must've been the spontaneity of their mashups–which included gangster rap, electro and indie rock–because the crowd looked a little dumbfounded at first. But they later relaxed and whooped as AraByrd dropped the hotshit mix of her own party track 'Byrdkick' for the finale and clambered up the bartop to deliver Beyonce-ish body poppin'.
The party might've ended early, but the TOPMAN after-party at Barsonic with Twilight Actiongirl was body-to-body, shout-and-sing-along mayhem from start to finish!
