After weeks of preparations and playing dress up (including for an exclusive photo shoot for Junk's November 2009 issue), Malaysian acts Couple, Killeur Calculateur, Lovesick Avenue and Twinkies finally took to the stage for TOPMAN's big bash at Zouk KL on 13 November.

It was a Friday and after days of rain, the evening was looking dry and rather promising. It was to be a party fusing music and fashion, and we sure spotted some cool kids lining up to get into Zouk's Mainroom. Each guest got a real nice TOPMAN thumb drive to keep, while TOPMAN members received a notebook and a 20% voucher for their next shopping visit to TOPMAN/TOPSHOP.

Also spotted were local personalities like Sharon Chong (frontwoman of Hamsterdamnaged and now They Will Kill Us All), Melissa Indot and Dhiya Izwin from The Otherside Orchestra. As the Mainroom filled up with indie music fans, outside the hitz.fm Cruisers were creating a bit of a ruckus as they gave away goodies to lucky guests.

Sharing the stage together for the first time ever, and at a superclub like Zouk KL too, Couple, Killeur Calculateur, Lovesick Avenue and Twinkies put on a great show dressed to the nines in TOPMAN and TOPSHOP. Lovesick Avenue was up and fully impressed with their saccharine tunes, leaving the crowd wanting more–we'll just have to wait for their debut album release! Post-punk/math core mafia Killeur Calculateur made the party a rather black celebration with their dark uniformity.

Later, Couple brightened up the visual (and aural) mood with their happy-clappy sound and new tunes from their latest release Teenage Disc Fantastic. Last but not least, to take the party to higher ground were Twinkies, the cheeky duo of AraByrd and Nadia. It must've been the spontaneity of their mashups–which included gangster rap, electro and indie rock–because the crowd looked a little dumbfounded at first. But they later relaxed and whooped as AraByrd dropped the hotshit mix of her own party track 'Byrdkick' for the finale and clambered up the bartop to deliver Beyonce-ish body poppin'.

The party might've ended early, but the TOPMAN after-party at Barsonic with Twilight Actiongirl was body-to-body, shout-and-sing-along mayhem from start to finish!

OK let's not get too excited just yet. We know how you guys hate it when we blog about rumoured tours but this one is kind of legit. There's talk a-brewin' of Tennessee band, Paramore possibly doing a "huge" Asian tour in March 2010. Logistically, it does seem plausible since the band will finish up their stint on Australia's 2010 Soundwave Festival in early March. Best believe Junk will be all up in that biznazz and you guys will be the first to know when we find out more, cause that's how we roll.

Just for sh*ts and giggles:
How many of you (even the haters) would wanna watch Paramore in concert?

UPDATE (25 Nov):

It's been a long time coming but Paramore have finally announced the first date of their Southeast Asia tour. They will be playing in Manila on 9 March at SM Concert Grounds. More dates to come :)

Handle With Care is one of my friend, from facebook...this is his band, a local pop punk, a bit emo style (^^)

Handle With Care is an independent pop punk band based in Petaling Jaya. The band consists of lead vocalist Faisal Yusof, lead guitarist Andy Seah, guitarist John Paul Pacaldo, bassist David Woong and Abdul Musowir(Moose) on drums. Faisal, Andy, John and Chee Ben Jin(former drummer) founded the band in late 2008 and were later joined by David in 2009. In August 2009, Ben left the band to further his studies overseas and was replaced by Moose in October 2009. A far cry from their beginning of playing covers, the band is now in the stage of song writing and recording with the intention of releasing an EP in 2010. The band is inspired by a variety of music ranging from pop punk to metal.

Tacked against the decidedly exotic backdrop of dancing palm fronds, surf-ready waves and the beach’s pristine pulchritude; the evening air at Impiana Resort Cherating was redolent with the aroma of barbequed seafood as attendees partook with hushed, polite conversation.

The radio DJs looked visibly relaxed, gamely swaying and dancing in the crowd. This chilled mode was espoused by all, not least by a few cheeky XFM crewmen who’d taken upon themselves to inhale helium from the balloons and converse loudly in Chipmunk-ey voices. Invitees, XFM contest winners and holidaymakers gathered to scrutinise the performances of Monoloque and Pop Shuvit. The latter generated the first sing/dance along of the evening with ‘Old School Rocka’ and ironic New Wave ode ‘Oh Sizuka’.

Stonebay gave a solid turn–deluging the breezy milieu with the 90s alternative rock sonicry that recalls Dave Matthews Band while Altimet cut loose with a lusty horn section, and proceeded to dish out old school hip hop with that Sugarhill Gang cover and his own righteous tune ‘Cantik’. However, it was Bunkface that dialled the energy level up with their precocious, if tight, musicianship and abundant punk pop clichés–all of which were enthusiastically lapped up by the 200-strong, mostly teenage audience.

Fresh-faced Ana Raffali was the surprise late addition to the event, owing to Pesawat’s late arrival. With her petite, baju kurung-clad form and lone guitar framed in the spotlight, the troubadour gave a sincere, honest performance–her soaring, saccharine vocals clambering lithely around the spine of her sparse songsmithery. In spite of being divested of a backing band, the girl displayed a crackling self-possession and vulnerability absent from many of the acts present. Pesawat finally circled in and rallied the audience into a sync-clapping mass to the rhythm of their Brit-tinged ditties. Hujan–whose members Noh and Dimas had been trading witticisms with the onstage acts from the front row of the crowd throughout the night–continued the fun by slipping in an impromptu Bunkface and Stacy AF cover into the setlist with their characteristic drollness.

It all felt like a weekend company barbecue or a family day outing. Now, if only there was a reggae band…

It's a clash of sounds, creativity and expression. The all-encompassing YOUREKA! Finale Party by Yahoo!, in collaboration with Junk, comes at you this month, fusing together music, art, fashion and straight-up fun in one singular ball of greatness.

So much is going down, it's overwhelming. So let's start from the very beginning: first off, some stunning regional musical talent will be playing, like the amazingly successful emo rockers from the Philippines and our very own Junksounds Awards 2008 winners Urbandub (who seem to have their names carved on awards before they came out of the forge). And once you've come out of the emotional wringer, then get ready to get your dance on with Inspirational Joni, the dance rockers from Indonesia; Malaysian pop punkers Bunkface (new addition); Singapore's DJ of the stars, Inquisitive; and the enigmatic electro duo who have made the KL party scene what it is, LapSap.

You also get to show your creative side in the cool interactive art installation–where you use the YOUREKA! stencil (find it in the November issue of Junk!) and spray paint the YOUREKA! Wall in any manner you see fit. Multiply that by the 2,000 guests at the YOUREKA! Finale Party, and what you end up with is a living, evolving piece of communal art. There will also be the cool YOUREKA! Motion Wall by Efozy installation, which responds to motion, for you to check out!

But that's not all. There are also some cool engagement activities where you can learn how to customise jerseys with Kitsch by Ellie, accessories with Justin Yap, and shoes/clothing with They Art Studio, plus an assortment of other demos and art/fashion/design vendors. So you could (in theory at least) deck yourself out like a pirate and search for hidden booty in the amazing treasure hunt.

YOUREKA! Finale Party by Yahoo!
Date: Wednesday, 25 November 2009
Time: 7pm onwards
Venue: Capsquare KL Live (ex-Ruums), Jalan Sultan Ismail, KL, Malaysia

ELLEGARDEN - Space Sonic
A Band from Japan, very long time...since their influences by alternative and punk rock, video look like sum 41 + nirvana style...(^^) i like this video ~~
posted by ♥ Mikeru Wei ♥ at 8:17 PM | 0 comments
Early examples of punk rock / no wave in Japan include The SS, The Star Club, The Stalin, INU, Gaseneta, Lizard (who were produced by the Stranglers) and Friction (whose guitarist Reck had previously played with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks before returning to Tokyo) and The Blue Hearts. The early punk scene was immortalised on film by Sogo Ishii, who directed the 1982 film Burst City featuring a cast of punk bands/musicians and also filmed videos for The Stalin. In the 80s, hardcore bands such as GISM, Gauze, Confuse, Lip Cream and Systematic Death began appearing, some incorporating crossover elements. The independent scene also included a diverse number of alternative / post-punk / new wave artists such as Aburadako, P-Model, Uchoten, Auto-Mod, Buck-Tick, Guernica and Yapoos (both of which featured Jun Togawa), G-Schmitt, Totsuzen Danball and Jagatara, along with noise/industrial bands such as Hijokaidan and Hanatarashi.

During the late nineties and early 2000s bands like Hi-Standard, Hawaiian6, Snail Ramp, Garlic Boys, BBQ Chickens, Husking Bee, Nicotine and Going Steady brought Japanese punk to new heights.

Later examples of Japanese alternative bands are Miyavi, Ellegarden, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Maximum the Hormone, Pure Q&a and Back-On.

In the 1980s, the instrumental/ band A.B.'s had minor UK chart success. Another subgenre is characterized by highly technical, yet dissonant, instrumentals. The vocal style runs the gamut from J-Pop style, to incoherent screeching, to traditional Japanese style singing. Lyrics may be generally nonsensical and random. Their visual style also reflects this and may run to the extremes in Visual kei bands. This style seems to be a conscious rejection of the old Japanese proverb, "The nail that sticks out will be hammered down." When their culture prides itself on conformity and harmony, these artists strive to create dissonance and attract the wrong kind of attention. This is relatively "new" genre, starting in the late 1990s and just now getting its voice heard. Notable bands in this subgenre include: Mucc, Dir en grey and the GazettE.

Rade is a local malaysia band, from J-rock influences luna sea, larc~en~ciel and oither jrock band. I'm a friend with their bassist and vocalist. June and Hung Siew, i like their music x:D

Rade is an English pop-rock band based in Malaysia.

The band was originally founded in 2001 as a J-rock cover band by high school friends Jeremy, Kok Keong, and Hung Siew out of their love and passion for J-rock music. Jun and CY joined in later in 2004 and this line-up has remained the same till this day.

Rade played as a cover band for 4 years in the Klang Valley notably in J-rock Gigs such as the J-Rock Kingdom series 1,2 and 3 and a number of smaller gigs. Thus, gaining quite a popularity in the niche J-rock scene in the Klang Valley.

At the end of 2007, the band decided to compose their own songs in English as they were tired of being just a cover band. With songs written mainly about common day life and emotions, Rade is taking their music one step further with their J-rock influenced English composition which is a uniquely distinctive sound of its own.

I get daily emails from young talent who are looking to audition for JYP Entertainment or YG Entertainment. I do try to direct these people to the correct information. Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that these people are doomed before they start. The Korean pop music industry is so tough to break into… you stand the same chance at winning the lottery and starting your own record label.

However, there are other Korean companies out there that accept global auditions and will probably give you a better chance at Kpop stardom. Here is the Rundown.

J Tune Entertainment: The claim to fame for J Tune Entertainment is that it has Jung Ji Hoon (Bi – Rain). This company is actively accepting auditions and is looking to make its mark on the Kpop community.

You can audition via email. I suggest you have a resume, a portfolio of your accomplishments, a headshot, and a video clip. Since it is being transmitted via email I suggest that you try to keep your attached file below 5mb.

You can audition by sending this information to audition@jtunecamp.co.kr. If they like you they will respond.

Lets' me introduce you all a new chinese local indie band Voltz. Hopefully you will like it. Honestly in my opinion this band is not really sucessfull yet cuz their makes song don't have a nice intro and arrangging is not so good in the song. Mostly the piano type of song. However lets' us look about it okie (^^)

Voltz - I Love You (Live at VR1)
This song very not good in rytham, but the keyboardlist only play chord not melody also, somemore vocal is good but can't hear so well. Really need a work on this song.

Voltz 罪 (Live at VR1)
The song is rock, but the beat is out...not make sence but a double song drum in intro. can make more nice and sucess song in this.

Voltz - I will be someone (Live at VR1)
Rytham is good, but the beat is out...some all the song can be catchy a bit more nice, pop rock COOL (^^)

Voltz - 我的最爱 (Live at VR1)
This song quiet nice, but arrangging is not good..somemore why? all title is similar. No more idea gerr (^^)

Soory to all Voltz Fans' sorry to cretize this band. Cuz i just straight forward and mind own opinion on music. Maybe you can say i talk nonsence and dunno about music. Everyone have his own taste rite. Hoe you all don't mind i straight forward.

Unexpected Mercy. Consisting six passionate musicians with a desire to influence and inspire others with music. They are a metalcore / death metal / post-hardcore influenced band and mainly based in Kuala Lumpur. Most of their members hail from different parts of Kuala Lumpur but it is the passion and vision as a band that connects them together to compose, play and perform music in our local underground scene. They consist of Joey - Vocals, Ian - Guitar, Russel - Guitar, Josh - Bass, Daniel - Synths, Vivian -Drums. Unexpected Mercy was formed approximately two years ago, with Ian being the founder of this band. After many internal struggles, they are now heading in the direction that they all want to focus .After months of preparation and composing our own material, they are now planning to gig and to also head to the studio for recording material. In regards to their band's musical genre, they believe that music has no boundaries but it has to be embraced with an open mindset. With deep metalcore influenced growls and death metal's high pitch screaming, combined with catchy guitar riffs and rhythm, mixing in groovy and heavy basslines, gelling up with sick synths and hard-hitting, chugging drums to orchestrate a sound that can inspire and influence listeners, fans alike. Most importantly, with lyrical content that can be relevant to living our daily lives, connecting with the music that is created to be part of the local underground music scene. We are slowly taking off with new material and more stuff to come. Thanks for your support. Cheers. Do contact

Demo Recording:

We understand that a lot of "students/student bands" have their original songs/ideas," but step away due to the high prices. However, in Fokyo Studio, we bring the price down to a reasonable amount, so you can record a decent demo of your song or idea.

So why wait? let your ideas flow free =)

rate:
RM25~50 /hour of recording
RM50~150/per song
(depending on the amount of work for recording and mixing the song)

Sam is one of my friend means can say my cousin kua chee (frequency cannon...friend) he is very good local indie artis, he also production a own video and other local artis. click his myspace and listen his song nice man !!

sammusicsam

Sam is a bacteria(kuman) who writes, produces and arranges his music on the 9th floor of some unknown building in Puchong infested with rats and other irritating bacterias.

He arranges the drums and plays the bass, guitar and keyboards for his music recording and then sends his songs to be mixed by his neighbor, Tan Chee Meng 'Godfather Producer of Jalan Puchong'.

Sam lives with a mosquitoe called Cik Nuar and recently he got a new housemate, 'the handsome cockroach' who works in PJ and his songs are mostly about his everyday life experiences as a bacteria sung in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

His first Malay single 'Aku Seekor Kuman' hit local radio stations (X FM and Hot FM) and received a fair amount of airplay in the middle of 2008. Few months later, his first English single 'Crazy' received ok ok rotation on Fly FM, Hitz.FM and X FM and that song was also nominated for Best Pop Song for the VIMA awards(a music award for independent artists from all over Asia).

Now his follow up Malay single called 'Pergi Buat Selamanya' is also receiving ok ok rotation on Era Fm, Hot Fm and X FM.

Sam is a solo singer-songwriter but for shows, he performs with a live band to deliver the pop rock energy of his songs. The line up consists of Nan 'Kuman Kering' on drums, Tom 'Kuman Tiang Elektrik' on guitars, Juad 'Kuman Mohawk' on bass, Abang As 'Kuman Taiko' on guitars, Boy 'Kuman Black Parang' on drums, Merlvyn 'Kuman Dream Machino' on guitars and Tan Chee Meng 'Kuman Fengtau' on guitars/bass.

Sam's friend Johanna Misai helps out by capturing shots for music video and also during his band's live performance but now he sombong already because he works in NTV7 now...hehe...just kidding. The other official videographer is also Faiz 'The Weed Tokan'.

Although he is considered new and remains relatively unknown to the music scene he has more new, interesting songs and music videos coming soon. He might release a full length album at the end of the year if the myspace kuman fans wants him to and if there is an ok ok response towards his music from the local music community. If not he'll still make music, only without an album :)

Super Junior-Trot (Korean: 슈퍼주니어-트로트), officially known as Super Junior-T (Korean: 슈퍼주니어-티) is the second official sub-unit of Korean boy band Super Junior. They are the first idol group known for capitalizing trot music, the oldest form of Korean pop music. Super Junior-T contains six Super Junior members, Leeteuk (the leader), Heechul, Kang-in, Shindong, Sungmin, and Eunhyuk.

Super Junior-T has released only one single in the short span of their career before they were announced to be on hiatus in 2008. The single "Rokuko" was Korea's sixteenth best-selling record and the number one best-selling single of 2007, according to the Music Industry Association of Korea. In November 2008, the subgroup returned with a debut in the Japanese music industry, releasing the Japanese version of "Rokuko."

Super Junior-T's music style is a distinctive style of trot, an old-fashioned style of Korean pop music. Their revised style of the genre includes mordernized K-pop melodies and also fast rap, notably performed by Shindong, Eunhyuk, and sometimes Heechul. Super Junior-T's goal is to evade the fading genre in Korea's current music industry and to introduce the young audience to a traditional style of music, hoping to increase awareness of older trot musicians and bring hopeful comebacks of trot to mainstream music. Emergence of Super Junior-T is also due to a strategy that Super Junior has been using, which is to show that they can accommodate many different musical genres.
